Attending Large Gatherings & Events

As residents of the "Entertainment Capital of the World," many of us visit The Strip and attend large gatherings and events on a regular basis. However, no place is immune from unexpected events, and we all have seen news of manmade or natural disasters happening at large gatherings.

In the light of the events that occurred at the beginning of 2025, EPSG would like to remind residents to be vigilant and take a few precautionary steps when attending large events:

Pre-Event Considerations

  1. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you may need to run, or walk longer distances than originally planned.
  2. Make sure your phone is charged at least 75-80%, and limit its use when under 30%.
  3. Establish a communications plan with those you are with, as well as with loved ones away from your event. Designate a person who is not attending the event, who could be central communication in case of emergency.
  4. Carry identification, at least a small card printed with your name, PLUS, your ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact(s) info ON YOUR PERSON. This could be useful if you are separated from your phone/purse, deplete device battery, and/or become unconscious or disoriented in an emergency. You could also call this person as a central communication if your party is separated.
  5. Make plans to meet your party at a safe location outside the event area in case of an incident, with an alternative if that location is unavailable.
  6. Inform loved ones when attending large public events, and share event plans with updates and estimated time of return.
  7. If driving to the event, pack change of clothes, towels, bottle(s) of water, jacket/hat, and a first aid kit in the car.

At The Event Location

  1. Observe the location of other entrances and exits, even if you have a designated entrance. In emergency situations, some exits may not be available and you may need to use other exits, possibly with more people.
  2. Be vigilant, and maintain a state of alertness commonly called "situational awareness". Take note of the people around, suspicious looking individuals or items, and look/listen to what’s going on in the crowds.
  3. If at any time you feel unsafe at an event, move to a safer location and inform security personnel, or call 911.

If You Find Yourself in an Unexpected/Emergency Situation

  1. If you can use your phone, try text messaging instead of a voice call. Texting uses less bandwidth and will be easier to get through. Once you inform your party or your contact person, turn your phone off to save battery. You may not be able to leave the location for a while.
  2. Do not go back into a potentially hazardous situation to retrieve your phone, purse etc. until authorities declare it as safe.
  3. If you are in close proximity to an active shooter situation, run away from the location. If you can't run away, hide and turn your phone off - not to alert the shooter of your location in case you get a call or alert.
  4. Always listen to authorities, security personnel, law enforcement, or emergency responders.
  5. In some situations, authorities may detain all the cars at the event location until they go through each vehicle and make sure it wasn't connected to the incident. Have alternative plans for transportation.

While incidents should not stop us from attending events, being prepared and vigilant can help prevent unnecessary anxiety or loss in an emergency. Couple steps taken before the event, can ensure easier communication and safer return to loved ones.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO BE PREPARED
