There are many situations which may require people to shelter-in-place for an extended period of time:
High winds, power loss, chemical leak, active shooter situation, and road closures are just a few examples – which all have happened in the Las Vegas area in the recent years. In a large, wide-spread event, professional responders and emergency organizations may be prioritizing The Strip area, where they can make a bigger impact. They may also be overwhelmed depending on the size of the emergency. It may take a while to extend the reach to outer areas, especially to Anthem, which is on the southern end of the Las Vegas Valley.
To be prepared for such an event, we recommend residents to have at least a 3-7 day supply kit which should help them survive on their own - until aid organizations can get on site, or start formulating a plan for shelters and extra supplies. SCA Recreation Centers are not designed to operate as shelters, and there are no extra stock or supplies for distribution, so it is important for people to survive on their own until aid organizations can get to the site.
To start, you can pick a less used area of your house (closet, cabinet, under the bed etc.) to assemble a box – making sure:
1. It is not exposed to extreme temperatures
2. It is easily accessible - so you can check it at least once a year to rotate expiring items, and make sure everything is in usable condition.
Once you pick a place, you are ready to start!

Putting together an Emergency Supplies Kit may seem like a big task if you've never done it before. To make this task easier, we suggest residents to have a list each month, and purchase a few items every time you go out shopping. Below you will see the list for each month as we go through 2025:
